CV NEWS FEED // Bishop Earl K. Fernandes of the Diocese of Columbus recently decreed Our Lady of Guadalupe, Star of the New Evangelization a diocesan shrine.
“A Diocesan Shrine dedicated to Our Lady serves as a tangible reminder of the love of God the Father in the hearts of Christian faithful and that we are a people continually on pilgrimage,” Bishop Fernandes stated in the decree he made in November for the establishment of the shrine.
According to the Catholic Times, Columbus’ diocesan newspaper, the parish where the shrine is located was formed through a merger between Holy Name Church and Santa Cruz Parish, the former place of worship for Latino Catholics. Still called Holy Name, the new parish now serves a more vibrant and thriving congregation than it could before the merger.
According to the Catholic Times, Bishop Fernandes celebrated Mass at Holy Name Parish Dec. 12, the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe.
The Catholic Times reported that Bishop Fernandes said the merger was a “remarkable success” that turned into an epicenter of devotion in the diocese.
“In my visits there, I see the faith and devotion to the Virgin of Guadalupe and to Eucharistic Adoration,” he said. “Many people drive from all over the city to worship there.”
He added that the pastor, Fr. Antonio Carvalho, has been committed to his work at the parish and has instilled a Marian spirituality in his parishioners.
“All of this led to me to issue a decree erecting the church as a diocesan shrine, a place of pilgrimage, a place which can serve as the spiritual oasis in the city of Columbus,” he said.
In his decree, Bishop Fernandes encouraged Catholics to make pilgrimages to the new shrine to honor Our Lady of Guadalupe and the Holy Name of Jesus.
