CV NEWS FEED // In a special call to mission during the National Eucharistic Revival, the bishops of Ohio are inviting the faithful to participate in a pilgrimage to Carey, Ohio, for the Vigil of the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary on Aug. 14.
According to the Catholic Conference of Ohio, the pilgrimage will begin at 9 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 14, after multiple Masses are celebrated throughout the day in both English and Aramaic, the language of the Chaldean Catholic rite.
The candlelight rosary procession featuring the Miraculous Statue of Our Lady of Consolation will start at the Basilica Shrine and continue to the Shrine Park.
Following the procession, the Vigil Mass of the Assumption will be celebrated at the outdoor Altar in the Shrine Park, with Bishop Daniel E. Thomas as the celebrant and Bishop Earl K. Fernandes as the homilist. Bishops Edward C. Malesic and Michael G. Woost will be concelebrants.
Many more bishops, priests, deacons, consecrated religious, and lay faithful from across the state are expected to attend the pilgrimage.
Devotion to Our Lady of Consolation is one of the earliest Marian honors, dating back to the second century. During the 17th-century plague in Luxembourg, the people formed a special union with Mary and enshrined an image of her as Consoler of the Afflicted. After the devotion spread to the United States, a replica statue of Our Lady of Consolation was commissioned and brought from Luxembourg to Carey, Ohio, in 1875.
