CV NEWS FEED // The Oakland Diocese recently confirmed two East Bay Catholic schools will close at the end of the year, with one of the closures having to do with a rise in crime and human trafficking operations near the school’s campus.
In a notice sent to parents at St Anthony Catholic School two weeks ago, the Oakland Diocese revealed that in addition to crime and human trafficking, the closure is also prompted by “homelessness, unemployment, and lack of affordable housing” near the campus according to a local report.
The school’s current enrollment is just 65 students.
Last year, reporters discovered “young girls and alleged pimps surrounding the campus” at St Anthony’s in East Oakland. The FBI later placed traffic barricades and cameras near the school.
Our Lady of Guadalupe School in Fremont is also closing. According to the Oakland Diocese, the closure is prompted by “an unsustainable decline in enrollment and diminishing reserve funds.”
The Oakland Diocese stated that St Anthony’s has also faced “overwhelming financial challenges.”
