CV NEWS FEED // Following Planned Parenthood of Greater New York’s announcement that it will close four clinics due to “financial challenges,” the New York State Catholic Conference is questioning the $35 million that Democrat Gov. Kathy Hochul recently allocated to the abortion giant.
In the same announcement, Planned Parenthood also stated that it will stop performing late-term abortions, explaining that “[d]uring this time of deep financial crisis, PPGNY simply cannot afford to contract anesthesiology services in Manhattan without sacrificing other essential patient services and community-centered programs throughout the state.”
News of the clinic closures and cessation of performing late-term abortion “is a welcome relief,” Director of Government Relations for the New York State Catholic Conference Kristen Curran said in an Aug. 7 statement.
“However, this development raises troubling questions for which taxpayers deserve answers,” Curran continued:
Recently, Governor Hochul unilaterally allocated an astounding $35 million to subsidize abortion clinics throughout the state.
If Planned Parenthood is now saying it’s too expensive to provide safe care to women in its clinics, we must ask where exactly are these tens of millions of dollars going?
Curran also noted a striking statistic about Planned Parenthood patients that indicates a need for the state to invest more deeply in life-affirming resources.
“It also was reported that more than half of Planned Parenthood patients rely on Medicaid,” Curran stated. “This statistic represents a glaring failure by the State of New York, demonstrating that the horror of abortion disproportionately affects low-income women.”
The Conference prays that the statistic serves as “a wake-up call” for lawmakers, Curran continued, expressing hope that lawmakers direct state resources towards those in need and work alongside the Conference to aid women needing support.
“Together,” she concluded, “we can work to build a place where no mother is pressured to end her pregnancy because of difficult circumstances.”
