CV NEWS FEED // On July 20, Las Vegas Raiders defensive end Malcolm Koonce led a football camp at the high school he graduated from, Archbishop Stepinac Catholic High School. The camp drew more than 300 young enthusiasts.
The camp, which hosted boys and girls aged 5 to 17, featured a variety of activities including the 40-yard dash, calisthenics, and non-contact football drills, according to a report from The Good Newsroom of the Archdiocese of New York. It also included entertainment from a DJ and an MC.
The event marked a return to his roots for Koonce, who graduated from Stepinac in 2015. He went on to play at the University of Buffalo. The Raiders drafted him in 2021.
Koonce, who transitioned from rugby to football during his freshman year at Stepinac, made headlines during the 2023 season with eight quarterback sacks, including three against Patrick Mahomes of the Kansas City Chiefs in a memorable Christmas Day victory.
Reflecting on the camp, Koonce shared with The Good Newsroom that “It was always in the back of my mind since I got drafted to come back and do a camp, and hopefully do it for years to come. It’s something I’ve always wanted to do.”
Named after Blessed Cardinal Aloysius Stepinac of Zagreb, Croatia, Archbishop Stepinac High School was established by 48 Catholic parishes in Westchester County with the support of Archbishop Francis Cardinal Spellman. The school has been offering a college preparatory curriculum rooted in Roman Catholic values for more than 70 years.
