CV NEWS FEED // Netflix co-founder Reed Hastings has donated $7 million dollars to a super PAC supporting Vice President Kamala Harris’ presidential campaign, after previously calling for President Joe Biden to step down.
According to a report from The Wrap, the donation Hastings made on July 23 was “his largest donation ever given in support of an individual candidate.” In the days leading up to the donation, Hastings tweeted “Congrats to Kamala Harris—now it is time to win.”
The congratulatory post and donation raised eyebrows on X, since Hastings had previously stated in another post the day before that the Democratic Party needed to nominate “a swing state winner.”
Nonetheless, Hastings had refrained from donating to the Biden campaign, stating earlier this month that the 81-year-old president needed “to step aside to allow a vigorous Democratic leader to beat Trump and keep up safe and prosperous.”
As The Wrap notes, Hastings’ donation comes in the wake of “an avalanche of donations following Biden’s withdrawal from the race,” in which Harris accrued $81 million in the first 24 hours of her campaign.
Conservatives on social media are reportedly calling for Netflix to be “canceled” over the donation.
Biden endorsed Harris in a post on X nearly 30 minutes after announcing he would no longer seek reelection, stating that he considered his choice to have Harris as his running-mate “the best decision I’ve made.”
“Today I want to offer my full support and endorsement for Kamala to be the nominee of our party this year,” he added. “Democrats — it’s time to come together and beat Trump. Let’s do this.”
