CV NEWSFEED // Pro-life advocates and medical professionals in Nebraska are seeking to propose a “better choice” to voters in November regarding abortion-related ballot measures.
Backed by Nebraska Right to Life and Nebraska Family Alliance, a new ballot initiative called “Protect Women and Children” aims to create constitutional protection for preborn children in the second and third trimesters, the Nebraska Examiner reported on March 19. Three registered nurses and a pharmacist are on the committee for the initiative, which would ban abortions after the first trimester, except in the case of rape, incest or medical emergency.
“This initiative establishes a floor of protection, not a ceiling, meaning preborn children must, at a minimum, be protected by the second trimester, and stronger pro-life laws could still be passed going forward,” a March 19 news release from Nebraska Family Alliance stated.
If the initiative passes, then Nebraska would become the first state to provide constitutional protection for preborn children in its state constitution, according to the release.
Pro-abortion group Protect Our Rights proposed an alternative initiative that would make abortion a fundamental right until fetal viability.
By July 3, organizers of these initiatives have to gather signatures from at least 10% of Nebraska registered voters, and half of those signatures must be from people from at least 38 of the state’s 93 counties, according to a Secretary of State pamphlet.
