CV NEWS FEED// The St. Francis Cabrini Shrine in Manhattan celebrated their patroness’s July 15 birthday with two Masses and a public screening of the movie “Cabrini.”
The Good News Room reported that the celebration lasted two days, starting with the movie screening on July 12 at 8:30pm on the Shrine’s lawn.
Shrine Director Julia Attaway said that they chose the lawn “because we want our neighbors, regardless of their faith background, to meet their famous neighbor,” adding that the movie prompts good questions, such as, “How did Mother Cabrini become so resilient? Why didn’t she suffer from compassion burnout? What kept her going?”

On Saturday, June 13, the day started with a talk by the actress of Sister Umilia’s character, Eugenia Forteza, followed by Mass celebrated in English by Father Michael Bruno.
Attaway noted that the focus of the entire two-day celebration would be the Eucharist: “As exciting as the rest of our celebratory weekend may be, for Mother Cabrini the highlight of every day was the Mass; that will be our highlight, too.”
After Mass, attendees had the opportunity to venerate a first-class relic of Mother Cabrini.
Attaway then gave a talk on the historical accuracy of the movie. Next, there was another Mass celebrated in Spanish, which was also followed by an opportunity to venerate Mother Cabrini’s relics.
Mother Cabrini’s order, the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, which she founded in 1880, continues to serve immigrants in New York and around the world. The Shrine is also the location of Cabrini Immigrant Services, which offers legal consultations free of charge, along with other services for immigrants and their families.
