CV NEWS FEED // NASCAR Haulers are set this week to deliver tiny homes built by Lowe’s Home Improvement and local builders for free to victims of Tropical Storm Helene in North Carolina who lost their housing.
The unprecedented flooding that destroyed much of western North Carolina in September has left victims to face the winter weather without proper shelter. Numerous non-governmental organizations, volunteers, and nonprofits have stepped up to help with cleanup efforts in the area and to bring housing to those in need. Some, such as EmergencyRV and Operation Shelter, are working to provide safe shelter through donated RVs.
The tiny homes mark another resourceful means of helping local North Carolina residents get back on their feet and inside warm shelter. According to WSOC-TV News, Lowe’s pledged $12 million toward relief help, including the tiny houses. The business’ goal is to build and give away 100, with the timeline for reaching this extending past Christmas.
The NASCAR Haulers — semi-trucks that usually carry race cars — are set to arrive in Asheville to deliver some of the tiny homes the afternoon of Dec. 19, according to WSOC-TV.
WSOC-TV also reports that volunteers from the Home Builders Association of Greater Charlotte, Habitat for Humanity, and Advance Roofing and Exteriors have all come together with Lowe’s volunteers to make the goal a reality. Lowe’s provided the building supplies and tools, according to NBC’s Charlotte, North Carolina, local affiliate, WCNC. The mini homes have a bathroom, kitchen, and living spaces, and they measure 8 feet wide and 16 feet long, WCNC reports.
“I see a sign of hope. I see a sign of neighbors helping neighbors,” Lowe’s Senior Director of Community Relations Julie Yenichek told WCNC about the efforts. “I see everybody coming together to make sure that our neighbors in western North Carolina have a safe and warm place for the holiday.”
