CV NEWS FEED // Archbishop José Gomez of the Los Angeles Archdiocese recently shared his deep admiration for the National Eucharistic Congress, describing it as a profound experience of “wonder, awe, and adoration.”
The Congress, held in Indianapolis in July, drew around 60,000 Catholics and marked a significant moment in the National Eucharistic Revival, a three-year initiative by the US bishops.
“Already we are seeing the revival’s fruits,” Archbishop Gomez stated in a letter published in the Catholic magazine Angelus. “People coming home to God and coming home to the Church.”
The Archbishop emphasized the Congress’s role in deepening the understanding of the Eucharist.
“There is a great movement of the Spirit going on in our times, a new thirst for holiness and truth, for a love that is pure and beautiful and everlasting,” wrote Archbishop Gomez. “And we have come to see more clearly that the Eucharist is the heart of the universe, and the secret of God’s plan of love for every soul.”
Besides Archbishop Gomez, over 200 Catholics from the Archdiocese of Los Angeles attended the Congress, in addition to five auxiliary bishops and over 12 priests.
“I believe history will remember this as an important moment in the life of the Church in the United States,” the Archbishop wrote.
As the Revival enters its final year, Archbishop Gomez emphasized the importance of becoming “Eucharistic evangelists.” He highlighted new initiatives like “Walk with One” and the “Back to Mass” campaign in Los Angeles, which aim to encourage Catholics to invite others to experience the joy of the Eucharist.
“We need to help our neighbors to see that the Love they are looking for is true and real, that this Love is already here, on our altars and in our tabernacles, and that this Love has a name, Jesus Christ!” he wrote.
Looking ahead, the Archbishop expressed enthusiasm for the planned pilgrimage from Indianapolis to Los Angeles next summer, which will culminate in a Corpus Christi celebration.
“We are honored and excited to have been selected and we are already making plans to welcome the pilgrims with a great celebration of faith,” the Archbishop stated.
