CV NEWSFEED // On July 29 LOOPcast hosts Tom Pogasic, Erika Ahern, and CatholicVote Vice President Joshua Mercer went live to discuss the offensive opening ceremony of the 2024 Summer Olympics.
The opening ceremony, which is supposed to highlight global camaraderie and unity, had the exact opposite effect on viewers worldwide.
“There was pretty easily provable blasphemy going on there,” began Pogasic.
“I saw that the response, instead of being like ‘yeah maybe that was poor taste maybe France shouldn’t have done it,’ was actually ‘No they were mocking this other art that was of Dionysus. You Christians are stupid and uncultured because you don’t know about this Dionysus painting.’ Which of course when you go look up the main [actor] … admits herself ‘Yeah I was Jesus.’”
The scene in question centered around LGBTQ self-styled “love activist” Barbara Butch. The DJ and producer was flanked by drag queens and was depicted wearing a halo.
“It’s almost like they’re lying,” gibed Mercer.

Ahern agreed: “And the Olympic spokesperson said it as well that it was a French pun on the supper on the Seine, and so they said it themselves.’”
The performance and subsequent apathetic apology issued by the Olympic spokeswoman Anne Descamps, has sparked outrage online which has led to many Christians suggesting a boycott of the Olympics.
“Clearly there was never an intention to show disrespect to any religious group. On the contrary, I think (with) Thomas Jolly, we really did try to celebrate community tolerance,” stated Descamps. “Looking at the result of the polls that we shared, we believe that this ambition was achieved. If people have taken any offense we are, of course, really, really sorry.”
Ahern noted: “For people to be like ‘You’re so uncultured you don’t understand, like why are you so offended grow up.’ No, see this is the central image of our faith and it is not acceptable bigotry that you’re watching it on the screen!”
Ahern ended. “I’m with Bishop Barron, you have got to speak up, Christians stop laying down and just taking it.”
“The other half of it is, okay wait I’m uncultured? If you’re saying this is culture, rolling around like pigs in mud, like really? I don’t want to have anything to do with it,” laughed Mercer.
“I wasn’t the one out there dressed up like a blue smurf,” Mercer quipped.
