CNN LAMENTS COHEN FLOP A panel of CNN commentators agreed that Michael Cohen failed to deliver a knockout punch against President Trump. “There were a lot of Democrats today with bags of popcorn expecting to see the crumbling of the Trump presidency,” said Anderson Cooper. DEMS PASS GUN CONTROL The Democratic-controlled House passed a bill to expand background checks on firearm purchases between private individuals. Background checks already exist for retail sales. Republicans were able to add an amendment requiring that Immigration and Customs Enforcement be notified when an illegal immigrant tries to buy a gun. This provision was opposed by 208 Democrats, but 26 Democrats joined 194 Republicans to successfully add this to the final bill. The Senate is considered very unlikely to pass the bill. READ |
RELIGIOUS SPEECH Supreme Court justices appeared ready to protect Maryland’s 40-foot Peace Cross that serves a memorial for World War I veterans. Atheists have sued to have the memorial cross torn down. Justice Samuel Alito asked the lawyer representing the American Humanist Association: “There are cross monuments all over the country, many of them quite old. Do you want them all taken down?” READ |
BISHOP PRAISES TRUMP ADMIN Archbishop Joseph Naumann praised a new federal rule which prohibits abortion clinics from receiving federal funds for family planning. “I applaud the Trump Administration for reaffirming that abortion is not family planning. Abortion ends the lives of families’ most vulnerable members, as well as damaging the spiritual, mental and physical health of mothers,” said Archbishop Joseph Naumann. READ |
MEDIA BLACKOUT The President of the United States called out Democrats for blocking a bill to protect babies who survive abortion. But there was no mention of this, or the Senate vote over on CNN’s website. There wasn’t even a slanted article over at Vox or the Daily Beast. “There’s no good way to spin the Democrats’ vote. OOPS To highlight the urgency of climate change, House Democrats scheduled a subcommittee hearing with expert witnesses to denounce climate change ‘deniers.’ But apparently it wasn’t as urgent as Democrats claim, because only two Democratic Members showed up.
