IMMIGRATION LEGISLATION House Republicans were supposed to vote on both a conservative and a moderate immigration bill yesterday. But shockingly, the conservative bill came just 20 votes shy of a majority — significantly better than most pundits or even Republicans believed possible. The GOP postponed a vote on the moderate bill until Friday, then later said they would vote on it next week. It’s possible that the bill will be amended again in an attempt to get 218 votes. MIGRANT HOUSING The Defense Department has told the Department of Health and Human Services that they will be able to house 20,000 immigrant children on military bases as early as July. READ |
CRYING GIRL IN VIRAL PHOTO The picture of a crying 2-year-old named Yanela Denise instantly went viral and became a poster child for the family separation at the border. In fact, Time magazine’s new cover is a photo illustration of President Trump looking down at the girl, with the words: “Welcome to America.” And yet, Yanela was not separated from her mother. “They’re together and they’re safe,” says Denis, the father, who is still in Honduras. He says he did not support his wife’s decision to pay a coyote $6,000 to transport her and the child to the United States. READ |

RELIGIOUS FREEDOM WEEK The US Bishops today start a week dedicated to religious freedom. Included in their educational effort is a legislative push for the Child Welfare Provider Inclusion Act, which would provide legal protections for religious-based adoption and foster care services. “Religious freedom allows the space for people of faith to serve others in God’s love in ministries like education, adoption and foster care, health care and migration and refugee services,” Archbishop Joseph E. HARVARD MEETS YOUNGSTOWN Pittsburgh-based journalist Salena Zito took a group of Harvard students on an eye-opening adventure to the heartland of the country. Many of the students admitted that they were only familiar with the coastal areas of the country. After visiting a favorite restaurant in Youngstown, Ohio, one student from the San Francisco Bay Area said she was ready to move there. “You don’t feel like a customer here. INTERNET SALES TAX The Supreme Court ruled 5-4 that states can require businesses to collect sales taxes even if they have no “physical presence” in that state. In coming to this decision, the Supreme Court overturned a previous court decision from 1992.
