CV NEWS FEED // In a landmark decision, a federal judge declared that Google is a “monopolist” and acted illegally in keeping its monopoly on search engines.
US District Judge Amit Mehta ruled that Google had paid companies like Apple to be the default browser on its devices, CNET reported. Google denied it.
Judge Mehta stated that Google violated Section 2 of the Sherman Act. He wrote, “After having carefully considered and weighed the witness testimony and evidence, the court reaches the following conclusion: Google is a monopolist, and it has acted as one to maintain its monopoly.”
The U.S. Department of Justice stated that Google accounts for almost 90% of searches, but Google disputes that number.
Judge Mehta can now decide on how Google must remedy this,
“His decision in that regard could force the company to change how it operates or even sell off part of the company,” CNET explains.
The Sherman Antitrust Act of 1890 outlaws corporate monopolies by prohibiting activities that restrict marketplace competition.
