CV NEWS FEED // The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception is set to throw another Super Bowl watch party this weekend for the homeless community of Kansas City.
The cathedral’s Morning Glory Ministries, a charitable organization, is hosting the party in the Bishop Hogan Center event hall starting at 5 p.m. Feb. 9, according to a Facebook post from the ministry.
The event will include barbecue from the local chain restaurant Jack Stack BBQ. Attendees will receive Super Bowl T-shirts. There will also be desserts, raffles, and soda.
This year, the returning champions Kansas City Chiefs are facing off against the Philadelphia Eagles, the same matchup as the 2023 Super Bowl.
The watch party tradition started several years ago when Laci and Ryan McClelland began partnering with Morning Glory Ministries to bring it together, according to Kansas City outlet KSHB 41, an NBC affiliate.
“We cannot wait to celebrate another Super Bowl with our guests. Visit our website if you’d like to leave a donation to help contribute to the event. GO CHIEFS,” the ministry’s Facebook post stated.
The ministry’s 2023 Super Bowl watch party hosted about 160 people, according to the Kansas City Star. As seen in the Star’s photos from the 2023 party, the ministry decorated event tables with the Chiefs’ team colors and decked out the space with red and gold balloons.
Many guests enjoyed coming together and being a part of the event. Party guest Lynn Grace, 51, told the Star that the excitement for the game was recognizable in the atmosphere at the party.
“We’re not alone. We’re not left out,” Grace said. “We’re able to be a part of everything that’s going on.”
Shawn Akins, 48, was another guest at the 2023 party.
“When you’re homeless, and you get to do stuff like this, it makes you feel like you’re part of the human race again,” he told the Star. “It makes you feel like you’re actually accomplishing something. Like you’re part of something big.”
