The US job market and economy has defied expectations by becoming larger and stronger amid criticism of President Donald Trump’s policies, media reported of a July 3 employment summary from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
The bureau’s report summarized employment in the US as of June 2025, finding that nonfarm payroll employment increased by 147,000 jobs. The unemployment rate is 4.1%, down slightly from the 4.2% measured in May 2024.
However, the report also found that the number of those who have been unemployed for 27 weeks or more increased by 190,000, hitting a total of 1.6 million. According to the report, the increase in long-term unemployed individuals offset a decrease in the same group, which occurred in May.
Analyzing the report’s findings, POLITICO called it, “the latest in a string of favorable economic data to bolster Trump’s case that the job market and price levels can sustain the massive policy shifts that he’s bringing about.”
The outlet also reported that predictions had said the number of new jobs would go down by 36,000, while unemployment would rise to 4.3%.
According to the report, government employment accounts for 73,000 jobs, mainly at the state level and largely in education. Federal government employment decreased by 7,000, which, as Reuters reported, is part of the White House’s effort to reduce spending and employees. Private payrolls increased by 74,000, Reuters added, noting that the number is the fewest jobs created in that sector since October 2024.
Other media noted that the report contradicted estimates, with AP News reporting that the job market in June looked stronger than Wall Street had expected.
“The unexpected acceleration in hiring signals the U.S. job market is holding up despite worries about how President Donald Trump’s tariffs may hurt the economy and inflation,” AP News reported.
AP News added that Carl Weinberg, chief economist at High Frequency Economics, said, “There is nothing to complain about here. You cannot find any evidence of a nascent recession in these figures.”
Other industries that saw job growth included healthcare and social assistance employment. However, Reuters reported that manufacturing lost 7,000 jobs, as did professional and business services. Meanwhile, wholesale trade lost 6,600 jobs.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt posted the results of the employment report on X, celebrating the rising number of jobs.
“For the FOURTH month in a row, jobs numbers have beat market expectations with nearly 150,000 good jobs created in June. American-born workers have accounted for ALL of the job gains since President Trump took office and wages continue to rise,” she stated July 3. “The economy is BOOMING again and it will only get better when the One, Big Beautiful Bill is passed and implemented!”
As CatholicVote previously reported, the House of Representatives passed the “Big Beautiful Bill” July 3 and sent it to Trump for his signature, which he gave July 4.
