CV NEWS FEED // John Paul the Great Catholic University recently premiered a feature film, titled “No Reception,” at the Ritz Theater in Escondido, California.
The university’s students and faculty wrote, filmed, directed, and produced the film. “No Reception” is the school’s second feature film project.
Director Dr. Christopher Riley described “No Reception” as a “revenge family comedy,” saying, “No Reception is ridiculous fun, and it’s meaty. It’s about things that really matter within our families,” according to an article on the university website.
The article described the film as follows:
The comedy centers on germaphobe Cody Mullen (Alex Campbell), a San Francisco businessman who grew up in the foster care system. Upon the death of his estranged father and the potential for a huge inheritance, he embarks on the journey home to his family’s vast mountain property. When his car breaks down in the wilderness, he is caught up in a feud between two eccentric hermits who give him a new outlook on family.
Acting student Timothy Battle said, “Working with Professor Riley was a wonderful experience, and I was able to get a sense of what it’s like working on a project with such a big scope,” adding. “I’m incredibly proud of my classmates who made this film possible.”
The film is set to release in early 2025.
The feature film project takes students through the process of film-making through a series of electives, according to the university website. It describes the project as a “revolutionary model of education that integrates feature film productions into our curriculum. This platform provides students the opportunity to collaborate with faculty to write, pitch, create, and distribute full-length movies.”
JohnPaul the Great has already released their first feature film, O, Brawling Love! for streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
