CV NEWS FEED // Aid to the Church in Need (ACN) Ireland announced Dec. 9 it is urgently appealing for prayers and support for Syria’s Christian community and all residents amid recent turmoil following the reported fall of President Bashar al-Assad’s regime.
The anti-Assad rebel offensive has captured Damascus, sparking both celebrations and anxiety about Syria’s future, particularly among its vulnerable Christian minority.

Catholic News, the official news outlet of the Irish Catholic conference of Bishops, reported that Michael Kelly, ACN Ireland’s public affairs director, highlighted the precarious situation in Aleppo, where about 25,000 Christians now face “an uncertain and challenging future.” He warned that some rebel groups are known for imposing strict Islamic law, increasing the community’s apprehensions.
Kelly called for global prayers, saying, “Let us unite in prayer for peace, protection, and hope for all citizens of Aleppo.”
According to Catholic News, Aleppo remains in dire straits. Even basic services are limited, and the city’s infrastructure has been devastated.
Marielle Boutros, ACN project manager for Syria, described a grim reality: “Only two hospitals are operating for critical cases, food supplies are insufficient, prices have soared, and the population faces bombings and insecurity on the ground.”
The collapse of schools, banks, and transportation has left residents isolated, and targeted violence continues. Incidents include the killing of an Armenian doctor and an attack on a bus attempting to leave the city.

Despite these challenges, religious leaders and congregations have chosen to remain in Syria to serve their communities. ACN has stepped in to provide emergency aid, seeking €350,000 (368,000 US dollars) to fund essential projects, including medical assistance for hospitals, aid for displaced families, alternative energy solutions, and support for Christian schools in Aleppo.
Philipp Ozores, ACN International‘s secretary general, emphasized the urgency: “This is a moment for unity and action. ACN urges the Christian community around the world to unite in prayer for Aleppo, asking for peace, protection, and hope for all citizens.”
ACN Ireland is part of an international organization that supports Christian communities in over 140 countries. Donations can be made via ACN’s website or by contacting ACN Ireland.
