CV NEWS FEED // Indonesian Bishop Silvester Tung Kiem San of Denpasar, Bali, has issued a sharp response to those interested in celebrating their nuptials by the beach.
In a recent pastoral letter, as AsiaNews reports, Bishop Sylvester San stated emphatically that Catholic marriages will only be considered valid if celebrated in a consecrated place of worship.
According to Wedinspire, Bali weddings are “up there” in terms of “iconic destinations,” with approximately 16,000 couples flocking to its beaches to tie the knot every year.
Bishops in the country previously released an exhortation against the widely popular practice in 2015.
Wedding tourism is a “substantial source of income” for the country, the report explained, noting “some hostility” towards Bishop Sylvester San’s letter among those in the tourism industry.
The website Your Bali Wedding reports that the average cost of a Bali destination wedding can cost anywhere from a modest $1,500 to $30,000 (U.S. dollars). The median cost of most wedding packages is $10,000.
