Congresswoman Mary Miller, R-Ill., filed a resolution June 3 in the House of Representatives to declare June “Family Month” instead of “Pride Month.”
According to the resolution as shared on X, the measure recognizes the role of the nuclear family as the foundation of society and highlights that children thrive in a home with married parents, a mother and a father.
The resolution also points out the importance of marriage and family in light of extremely high divorce rates and the fact that many young people choose not to get married at all, while those that do are often penalized by tax and welfare policies. The birth rate in the US has also fallen below the replacement level needed for a sustainable population and economy, the resolution adds.
Additionally, the measure condemns displays of “Pride” as “perverse” celebrations that “denigrate the nuclear family” and names former Presidents Bill Clinton, Barack Obama, and Joe Biden as key figures in promoting “Pride Month.”
In a June 3 op-ed published by the Washington Examiner, Miller expanded on her hopes to “reclaim June for the family.”
“The family is the bedrock of human civilization. It is the first institution created by God and the cornerstone upon which thriving societies are built. Strong families raise strong children, who grow into responsible citizens, courageous leaders, and the hard-working patriots our nation depends upon. Without strong families, America simply cannot survive,” she wrote.
She added that instituting “Family Month” would return the family to its place as the shaper of American culture, rather than contribute to the “national crisis” that “Pride” has created.
“America is currently at a crossroads,” she continued. “We can either continue down a path of cultural decay or we can return to the timeless truths that have always sustained us. If we want to preserve our nation for future generations, we must reject pride and rebuild the family.
“Let us make June a month that honors truth, celebrates parenthood, uplifts marriage, and raises up children who love God and America, because they are the future, and they are worth fighting for.”
CatholicVote Vice President Josh Mercer supported Miller’s resolution with a statement, saying, “If we want to make America great again, we have to make families great again.”
“That means we need to fight against pornography and abortion and divorce. But we must always remember to remind people of what it is that we strongly support,” he continued. “As Catholics, we know that the lifelong commitment of a man and a woman is the key to human flourishing. That’s why marriage pre-dates the formation of government itself. We strongly support this resolution to recognize June as Family Month.”
According to The Daily Wire, several parental rights organizations, including Moms for America, the American Family Project, the Family Research Council, and others, support Miller’s resolution. The measure is co-sponsored by eight other Republican representatives.
