A Democratic political group backed by billionaire George Soros is pouring millions into a long-term push to flip Texas from red to blue, The Wall Street Journal reported this week.
Their new initiative, called “Blue Texas,” will focus on recruiting candidates, training volunteers, and increasing voter turnout ahead of the 2026 midterms, according to the Wall Street Journal. Public events and organizing rallies are planned for the summer, with the group set to visit dozens of cities across the state.
Soros, a longtime donor to Democratic causes, has already contributed more than $3 million to Texas Majority PAC this year, according to campaign finance records.
Democrats haven’t won a statewide race in Texas in 30 years, and the state has voted Republican in every presidential election since 1980. Although Democrats have pointed to population growth — especially among Hispanic Texans — as a potential shift, past campaigns to flip the state have come up short.
The PAC’s leaders are hoping this time will be different, in part by building year-round infrastructure, according to the Wall Street Journal. The group says it spent $35 million in the 2024 cycle and expects to surpass that in future elections.
Looking ahead to 2032, organizers say their ultimate goal is to make Texas a battleground state. Because of population growth, the state is likely to gain more electoral votes after the next census — raising the stakes even more for both parties.
Katherine Fischer, a senior leader at the PAC, framed the campaign as essential for Democrats’ long-term national strategy.
She said, “There is no choice for Texas or for anyone else in the country who wants to see a Democrat in the White House after 2032 but to find a pathway through Texas.”
