CV NEWS FEED // A recent Gallup poll shows that the majority of Americans would prefer businesses do not comment on public policy events.
The poll showed that only 38% of Americans want to hear from businesses about current events. Since 2022, Americans have significantly decreased their support for businesses taking a public stance on non-business issues.
In 2022, 72% of Black Americans thought businesses should take a stance on current events; this year, only 54% think so. Similarly, Asian Americans’ support of businesses publicly expressing opinions on non-business issues decreased from 74% to 47% and Democrats’ went from 75% to 53%.
Republicans have slightly increased their support of businesses voicing opinions on political issues. Support rose from 18% in 2022 to 22% in 2024. However, they are still significantly less likely than Independents (34%) or Democrats (53%) to support businesses’ voicing opinions.
Americans are most likely to support businesses speaking on climate change (54%), mental health awareness (53%), and diversity, equity, and inclusion (53%.) This slim majority is made up largely of Democrats.
In addition, a majority of both Democrats (68%) and Republicans (61%) are less likely to purchase from a business that endorses a candidate from the political party that’s the opposite of the consumer’s. Both parties are only somewhat more likely to shop at a business that endorses a political candidate from their preferred party, with 34% of Democrats and 38% of Republicans saying it would make them more likely to purchase products.
