CV NEWS FEED // Almost half of Democrats would rather see their party become more moderate, rather than staying the same or becoming more liberal, according to new data from Gallup.
Conversely, a similar proportion of Republicans are satisfied with where their party is now, rather than wanting the party to lean more liberal or moderate.
Gallup compared data collected shortly after President Donald Trump’s inauguration in January with data collected in 2021 at the start of former president Joe Biden’s term. In 2021, Democrats were fairly evenly split between their desires for the future of their party, with 34% hoping to see the party become more liberal. Another 34% wanted it to become more moderate, and 31% hoped for it to stay the same. In 2025, however, 45% said they want the party to be more moderate, while only 29% said it should be more liberal and 22% said it should stay the same.
Republicans saw a large shift in satisfaction with the state of the party between 2021 and 2025. In 2021, 40% said the party should be more conservative, 34% hoped the party would stay the same, and 24% wanted it to become more moderate. In 2025, however, 43% were happy with the party as it is now, while 28% said it should be more conservative and 27% said it should be more moderate.
Generally speaking, liberal leaning Democrats were most likely to say that their party should become more liberal, while moderate Democrats said the party should become more moderate. On the other hand, conservative Republicans were most likely to say that their party should stay the same, while half of moderate Republicans generally said that they wanted the party to be more moderate.
