CV NEWS FEED // Gallup recently released its monthly “Most Important Problem” list, revealing that Americans were most concerned about the government or poor leadership, the economy, and immigration in January 2025.
Twenty-three percent reported that they viewed the government as the most important problem facing America, up from 20% in December 2024 and from the 16% recorded in August but less than the 26% from July. Concern about the government was the most common problem reported by Americans in January.
The second-most popular category was the economy, with 14% calling it the most important problem facing the country today. However, January’s percentage was the lowest since July, when 13% viewed the economy as a problem. In September, almost one-quarter of Americans had said the same thing.
Immigration closely followed the economy on the problems list, registering at 13% in January; however, the percentage of those who viewed immigration as America’s biggest problem in January was nonetheless the smallest it had been for more than half a year. Just four months earlier, in September, 22% said immigration was a large problem, a difference of nine percentage points.
Other areas of concern included the high cost of living or inflation (12%), unifying the country (7%), crime and violence (5%), and the decline of ethics, morals, religion, and family (5%).
Gallup also asked respondents which political party they thought could better handle the most important problems facing America. The most recent data is from September 2023, when 46% said the Republican Party and 41% said the Democratic Party. Twelve percent had no opinion or responded “other.”
Since 2021, more Americans, consistently, have said that Republicans can better handle important issues than Democrats can.
