CV NEWS FEED // This week a federal judge approved the Diocese of Rockville Centre’s $323 million bankruptcy settlement with approximately 600 victims of clergy sex abuse.
News 12 Long Island reports that Chief Judge Martin Glenn approved the settlement in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in the Southern District of New York in Manhattan.
The case began in 2019 as a result of the Child Victims Act. The law temporarily allowed abuse survivors to file lawsuits regardless of when they were abused.
The Diocese issued a statement expressing gratitude for the settlement agreement.
“For the sake of abuse survivors and the Church’s mission on Long Island, we pray that the Plan brings some measure of healing to survivors and allows the Church to carry on the saving mission of Jesus Christ,” the statement reads. “Victim survivors of child abuse deserve our respect, our prayers, and our pastoral support. The Church is grateful for their courage and perseverance.”
The Diocese stated that no parishes will close as a result of the settlement.
One parishioner in the diocese, Nieve Collado, told News 12 that even though parishioners are not required to directly contribute to the settlement, she would not mind doing so.
Collado added, “That’s okay because everything you put into the church is for God.”
