CV NEWS FEED // DePaul University recently hosted “Catholics for Choice” for a panel featuring Catholics who are pro-abortion on May 2, as a part of a campaign effort against the school’s contraceptive ban.
According to a report from the University’s online publication, The DePaulia, the event was organized by DePaul’s chapter of Planned Parenthood Generation Action (PPGA) as a kickoff event for the campaign.
PPGA runs a free off-campus contraceptive delivery program, supplied by Planned Parenthood and Advocates for Youth.
President of Catholics for Choice Jamie Manson was featured on the panel.
“My Catholic identity is my advocacy,” she said according to the report. “They are one and the same.”
Manson claims that she has felt a call from God to the priesthood since she was 14.
“Telling everyone that clearly God wanted me to be a priest helped me understand the profound misogyny of the Roman Catholic Church and that my body makes me illegitimate and unworthy,” she told those gathered for the panel.
Manson wrote in a social media post following the event, saying: “I never thought I’d be welcomed at a Catholic college—but DePaul proved me wrong!”
PPGA treasurer Maya Roman also stated in the report:
One of the most important aspects [of the event] is bringing people in who have affiliations with the Catholic religion, who are also pro-contraceptive and pro-choice, to discuss that the contraception ban—although the Church implements them—doesn’t necessarily mean that access to contraception is inherently anti-Catholic.
Founded and operated by the Congregation of Mission (CM), also known as the Vincenians, DePaul University’s policy states that “the distribution of birth control devices, of any kind, is strictly prohibited on university premises.”
