CV NEWS FEED // Democratic Senate candidates from Michigan, Wisconsin, and Pennsylvania are disassociating themselves from Kamala Harris as polls show waning support for the vice president in all three swing states.
Real Clear Polling reported that Donald Trump currently leads Harris by 0.4 in Wisconsin, 0.8 points in Pennsylvania, and 1.2 points in Michigan. As support for Harris and her policies declines, incumbent Sen. Tammy Baldwin of Wisconsin, incumbent Sen. Bob Casey of Pennsylvania, and Rep. Elissa Slotkin of Michigan are aligning themselves more with one of Trump’s favorite talking points — China — than with Harris’ priorities.
According to Real Clear Polling, Baldwin has focused on “her commitment to boosting domestic infrastructure over Chinese production” as well as “her support of Trump’s tariffs on Chinese imports.”
“Her team is working overtime to point out that she is currently working with Trump’s running mate J.D. Vance on a bill that aims to support domestic industry and farming in an effort to paint her as a Democrat that Republicans can vote for. When Harris visited Wisconsin on Thursday, Baldwin stayed away,” Real Clear Polling noted.
In Pennsylvania, Casey has used the same approach both to highlight his protection of fracking and to attack his opponent, Dave McCormick, for reportedly having financial ties to China.
In light of Michigan’s extensive production of motor parts, Slotkin has begun focusing on keeping manufacturing in the U.S., rather than in foreign countries.
“[I]f there’s going to be a new generation of vehicles, I want that new generation built right here in Michigan, not China,” she reportedly said, according to Real Clear Polling.
All three Democratic Senate candidates are performing well in their states, with Baldwin up 2.0 points, Casey up 1.9, and Slotkin up 2.1. Democrats need to win the three races in order to maintain their control of the Senate, Real Clear Polling reported.
“The candidates seem to understand that the less voters associate them with the presidential race, the better chance they have at victory,” Real Clear Polling concluded.
