CV NEWS FEED // A daily political column run by the Democratic Party has released its analysis of Kamala Harris’ potential options for vice president.
DemList has provided an overview of the seven most likely vice president candidates for Harris’ presidential campaign in its most recent daily email. The organization named Sen. Mark Kelly (AZ) and governors Josh Shapiro (PA), Roy Cooper (NC), Tim Walz (MN), Andy Beshear (KY), and J.B. Pritzker (IL) as potential running mates.
According to the Democratic National Committee’s (DNC) Rules and Bylaws Committee’s process for selecting a vice president, Harris has until Aug. 1 to announce her intention to run. After that, hopeful presidential candidates will begin lobbying for support from delegates to gain the nomination.
Once the nominee is chosen, they will have until Aug. 7 to choose their running mate. So far, Harris is the only Democratic candidate to have announced the intention to run. She allegedly has already secured enough support from delegates to secure the nomination.
Shapiro’s name has been frequently bandied about in the media as Harris’ most likely choice.
DemList describes the anti-Catholic PA Governor as “a moderate and one of the country’s most popular Governors with a 59% favorability rating;” someone who could help win over voters from the crucial state to Harris’ campaign. However, the email noted, Shapiro’s stances towards standard leftist issues such as the Israel-Hamas war make him less palatable to progressives.
DemList also highlighted Kelly as an “ideal choice,” pointing out that his “relatively tough stance on immigration would be a boon to Harris,” but that his opposition to President Joe Biden’s labor legislation might pose an issue. In any case, the Arizona senator reportedly earned “more votes than any other Democrat on the ballot” during the 2020 elections.
DemList also cast its spotlight on Walz as another likely candidate among the seven for vice president. A six-term rural congressman and former Army National Guard member, Walz could be seen by working-class voters “as a potential counter to Trump’s populist running mate, Ohio Senator JD Vance,” the email stated.
