CV NEWS FEED // A recent New York Post report, based on New York Police Department data, revealed an 11% increase in reported rape cases in New York City this year compared to the same period last year.
According to The Noticer, data reports that from January 1 to July 14, 2024, there have been 880 reported rapes, up from 796 during the same timeframe in 2023.
Certain neighborhoods have witnessed even more dramatic increases, with some areas reporting more than double the number of cases.
The report highlights a significant rise in specific areas of New York City. Most notably, there has been a 300% increase in reported rapes in Manhattan’s 10th Precinct, which includes Chelsea and Hell’s Kitchen.
Additionally, Midtown South Precinct, covering Times Square, experienced a 111% rise, while the 101st Precinct in Rockaway Peninsula, Queens, and the 105th Precinct in Eastern Queens reported increases of 100% and 70%, respectively.
Officials report that while many rapes are committed by individuals known to the victims, incidents involving strangers are growing in frequency.
The Noticer notes that experts are suggesting several factors that may be contributing to this disturbing trend, including a rise in the migrant population, controversial bail reform policies, liberal prosecutorial practices, and reduced manpower within the NYPD.
“It’s no secret that the NYPD is down significantly in terms of force size,” criminal justice policy expert Rafael Mangual told the NYP.
The NYPD has pledged to “vigorously investigate every single rape complaint” amid the troubling rise in sexual assaults, many of which garner significant media attention due to their brutality.
