CV NEWS FEED // The Chartres Cathedral pilgrimage, set for June 7–9, has limited pilgrims to 19,000 — a record number of attendees — a month after suspending registration due to an overwhelming number of applicants.
The number of applications exceeded the capacity of available facilities, according to organizers, Catholic Culture reported.
The National Catholic Register reported in April that the organization closed applications just a few days after they opened them, citing “database limits, payment systems, a swamped secretariat — everything was under intense pressure.”
The pilgrimage is especially popular for Catholics devoted to the traditional Latin Mass, as each of the liturgies in the pilgrimage is celebrated in the old rite, which has been significantly curtailed by the late Pope Francis’ motu proprio Traditionis Custodes.
The opening Mass of the pilgrimage was held at Notre-Dame Cathedral until 2019, when a fire burned the iconic French Gothic cathedral. Despite the famed cathedral’s reopening, this year’s opening Mass will be held at St. Sulpice, the city’s second-largest church after Notre-Dame. .
As CatholicVote previously reported, France saw record numbers of conversions this year, with 10,384 adult catechumens entering the Church on Easter Vigil.
According to the social media page Catholic Arena on X, even France’s mainstream media is reporting on the vast numbers of youth flocking to the Catholic faith, citing the record numbers of attendees at the Chartres pilgrimage as one example.
