CatholicVote this week published an open letter to Cardinal Wilton Gregory of the Archdiocese of Washington, DC, urging him to “address the growing and unavoidable scandal to our faith” that President Joe Biden represents.
The letter, written “on behalf of faithful Catholics committed to Christ and his Church,” explains:
We have watched our faith be abused and exploited by the president for too long, and the scandal has reached a gravity which can no longer be ignored. The president’s actions are not merely a matter of politics; they represent an existential threat to the integrity of the Church in America.
The letter was prompted by a recent viral video of Biden making the Sign of the Cross at a pro-abortion rally in Florida. The president crossed himself when another speaker condemned the state’s landmark law protecting unborn babies once a heartbeat can be detected.

Following the president’s gesture, CatholicVote president Brian Burch said in a statement to Fox News Digital:
Biden’s use of the Sign of the Cross in support of abortion is a disgusting insult towards all Christians, but especially of Catholics whom he claims as his own. The Sign of the Cross is a sacred gesture used by believers to bless themselves, ask forgiveness, or to protect them from temptation. Instead, Biden has turned this ancient Christian practice into an endorsement of abortion extremism.
The letter lists a number of examples showing “the way the president has used his authority to intentionally assault the tenets of our faith.” The letter then asserts that Biden’s “stunt in Florida shows he has gone beyond” the practice of “cafeteria Catholicism” that Gregory had accused Biden of only weeks earlier.
“The faithful in the pews are deeply demoralized to see everything we hold dear treated with contempt by a man who claims to profess the Catholic faith,” the letter continues:
His actions sow division in our Church in a time when the Holy Father and bishops worldwide are trying to unify us, and sow confusion among non-Catholics as to whether we are really committed to our own teachings.
The letter argues that Biden’s soul is in danger and that Gregory has a responsibility to call Biden to repentance.
“We are also concerned for the president’s soul as he persists in grave error on the world stage at his advanced age,” the letter concluded. “We urge you to act to protect the Church in America and the president’s soul. We believe it is your duty, and we rely on you.”
CatholicVote is urging all Catholics to sign the letter to Gregory.
“We aren’t going to sit idly by and watch as Biden employs sacred gestures of our faith in support of the slaughter of the unborn. And our bishops shouldn’t either,” Burch stated.
