CV NEWS FEED // Several Catholic universities in the United States made headlines in 2023 for going against Church teaching in favor of adopting liberal policies.
Campus Reform recently published a list of the top three traditionally Catholic universities which went against Church teaching with respect to pro-life and sexuality issues in 2023.
According to the report, the University of San Diego’s (USD) 2023-2024 student health care plan, Aetna Student Health, covers “gender-affirming care,” including sex-change surgeries, hormone treatment, and “counseling.”
The plan also covers 80% of costs for voluntary sterilization, and 100% of costs for contraception and abortion for its students.
As CatholicVote previously reported, the University of Notre Dame recently came under fire for hosting drag events on campus, despite its traditionally Catholic identity.
In addition, according to the report, one of the university’s leading professors recently gave a defense of the drag shows on campus, saying they were not intended to “counter the teachings of the Church.”
Notre Dame’s student-run newspaper, The Irish Rover, has spoken out continuously against the practice, with Editor-in-Chief Nico Shmitz calling out the university in an op-ed published in October:
In supporting lies about the human person—lies that say men can be women and that a minstrel show of femininity is a legitimate art form—the university is not only actively working against her [sic] mission, but permitting irreparable damage to its community and image.
Professor Pam Wojcik is set to host a symposium on drag performances in November 2024 in line with her one-credit course, titled: “What a Drag: Drag on Screen—Variations and Meanings.”
Lastly, the report called attention to Villanova University for “using its influence to affirm a definition of marriage that runs contrary to Catholic teaching.”
The University’s Student Life page features a statement on LGBTQ+ individuals, condemning the Vatican for categorizing same-sex unions as sinful, along with “A Prayer for All Marriages,” which asks God to “lead us towards the day when all loving unions will be seen as sacred.”
