CV NEWS FEED // After a diocese in England conducted a preliminary investigation into allegations against a priest who was going to become a bishop in February, the priest will continue his parish duties.
The Diocese of Clifton announced on March 25 that the priest, Rev. Canon Christopher Whitehead, was going to be installed as Bishop of Plymouth, but has since returned to priestly duties at Saint John the Evangelist in Bath, according to Premier Christian News. Whitehead’s installation was canceled three weeks before it would have taken place.
The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of England and Wales explained that the decision followed “a canonical process.”
On March 22, the Diocese issued a statement explaining that unspecified allegations were raised against Whitehead. During the diocese’s investigation, Whitehead was not participating in active ministry.
“At the conclusion of the aforementioned inquiry, it was determined that no canonical action was warranted,” the statement noted. “The Diocese communicates that Canon Whitehead has resumed his duties as Parish Priest of Saint John the Evangelist in Bath.”
A spokesperson for the diocese reported that the Holy See has not yet announced whom Pope Francis will appoint to be the next Bishop of Plymouth, according to Premier Christian News.
