CV NEWS FEED // Cardinal Robert W. McElroy will be formally installed as the eighth archbishop of the Archdiocese of Washington during a special Mass March 11 at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception.
The ceremony will begin at 1:30 p.m. EST with a liturgical procession featuring bishops, priests, deacons, and faithful from across the country, according to a press release from the Archdiocese. The Mass itself will commence at 2 p.m.
Cardinal McElroy, who has led the Diocese of San Diego since 2015, was appointed by Pope Francis Jan. 6 to succeed Cardinal Wilton D. Gregory, whose retirement was accepted upon reaching the customary age.
Cardinal McElroy, a vocal critic of the Trump administration, outlined the elements he considers essential in shaping his vision for the future of the Archdiocese, CatholicVote reported in January. These include: “The Gospel of Jesus Christ and the teachings of the Church; a pastoral perspective where truly love and truth can meet, a dedication to missionary discipleship, and a growing understanding of the real lives of the women and men and children and families, singles, priests and religious that form this vibrant community of faith.”
The public is invited to attend the installation Mass, which will be livestreamed here.
