CV NEWS FEED // Conservative political commentator and former Daily Wire podcast host Candace Owens this week announced that she has entered the Catholic Church.
“Recently, I made the decision to go home. There is of course so much more that went into this decision and that I plan to share in the future. But for now, praise be to God for His gentle, but relentless guiding of my heart toward Truth,” wrote Owens on April 22 in a post on her X account:
“So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”
I do not fear.
Christ is King.
Before entering the Catholic Church, Owens was a Reformed Evangelical Protestant. Owens’ husband, George Farmer, grew up Evangelical and converted to Catholicism while studying theology at Oxford.
In May 2023, Farmer debated conservative podcast host Allie Beth Stuckey on Protestantism and Catholicism.
“At the time of the Farmer-Stuckey debate, Owens revealed that she regularly attended Mass with Farmer and their children but was not yet decided on making a denominational change,” according to online news outlet Black Catholic Messenger. “By March of this year, however, in response to a social media post asking if she is Catholic, she responded, ‘Almost there.'”
Owens’ April 22 announcement that she has converted to Catholicism was met with congratulatory and welcoming responses from Catholic accounts on X.
Catholic journalist Sachin Jose posted on his X account a quote from Scott Hahn, a biblical professor at Franciscan University of Steubenville and Catholic convert.
“Welcome home, Candace Owens, dear sister-in-Christ and beloved daughter of the King of kings!” Hahn said, according to the post. In a separate post, Jose also personally wrote “Welcome home” to Owens.
Crisis Magazine Executive Director Eric Sammons posted to his X account:
Praise God for His mercy!
(And note to my fellow Catholics: don’t look to Owens as an expert on Catholicism nor condemn her for any misstep she might make in understanding/proclaiming Catholicism.)
Joshua Charles, a Catholic convert and founder of the apostolate Eternal Christendom, replied “Welcome Home,” to Owens’ announcement post, continuing:
The road ahead is tough, both without and within the Church.
May we all persevere to the end in the One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church!
Owens currently has five million followers on X. She formerly worked for the conservative media platform Daily Wire as a podcast host, but parted ways after a lengthy controversy between her and Daily Wire leadership.
According to online liberal news outlet Slate, “Owens’ relationship with the Daily Wire had been rapidly deteriorating for a while, over antisemitism generally and the war in Gaza… She highlighted the death of Christians in one Israeli airstrike. In one post, she wrote, ‘There is no justification for a genocide. I can’t believe this even needs to be said or is even considered the least bit controversial to state.’”
Daily Wire co-founder and podcast host Ben Shapiro is Jewish and has expressed his support of Israel in the conflict.
“In a Nov. 14 video responding to Owens’ comments, Shapiro said, ‘Her behavior during this has been disgraceful.’ That interaction kicked off quite a feud,” Slate reported:
Owens responded the same day by posting, cryptically, “No one can serve two masters. … You cannot serve both God and money.”
Shapiro responded: “Candace, if you feel that taking money from The Daily Wire somehow comes between you and God, by all means quit.”
Owens responded on X, criticizing Shapiro, writing, “You cross a certain line when you come for scripture and read yourself into it.”
Owen’s response to Shapiro was met with both support and harsh criticism from conservative personalities.
On March 22, Owens announced that she was no longer working with the Daily Wire.
