CV NEWS FEED // A growing movement in Alberta is calling for the Canadian province to explore statehood in the US, with lawyer Jeffrey Rath leading the charge.
Appearing on “FOX & Friends” Thursday, Rath announced that he is leading a delegation to present a proposal to a representative of President Donald Trump, advocating for Alberta to become a US state, a US territory, or an independent sovereign nation with economic ties to the US.
“There’s literally hundreds of Albertans that are reaching out and volunteering to join our delegation,” Rath said.
He attributed the surge in support to Canadians’ growing frustration with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s leadership. “They’ve completely lost their way,” he said of Trudeau’s administration.
In a video circulating on X, Rath specifically targeted Trudeau’s economic policies.
“It’s quite evident that we’re being governed by idiots in Ottawa who don’t understand that we can’t afford a trade war with our largest partner,” Rath said.
“Rather than simply apologizing to President Trump for not meeting our NATO commitment and not adequately securing our border… the Trudeau government has decided to declare a trade war and run up trillions of dollars in costs – like they did during COVID in a made-up emergency.”
Earlier this week, Trudeau declared that the US and Canada are in a “trade war,” launching retaliatory tariffs on US goods immediately after Trump’s tariffs on Canadian products took effect.
Trudeau, for his part, has dismissed the idea of Alberta joining the US. In January, he posted on X: “There isn’t a snowball’s chance in hell that Canada would become part of the United States. Workers and communities in both our countries benefit from being each other’s biggest trading and security partner.”
Despite Trudeau’s remarks, Rath argues that Alberta is culturally and economically more aligned with the US than with Canada.
“People in Alberta are fed up with being governed by idiotic politicians back in Ontario, that do not understand our province and do not understand that culturally, we’re far more closely affiliated with our friends to the south in Montana, than we are with all of the people in Ottawa,” Rath said during his Thursday interview.
With Trump repeatedly floating the idea of Canada becoming the 51st state, Rath believes now is the time for Alberta to make its case.
“There’s a number of us in Alberta that have had enough and want to go speak to the Trump administration about the benefits of Alberta joining the United States,” he said.
