CV NEWS FEED // The Archdiocese of Chapeco, Brazil, allowed a female Anglican ‘priest’ to concelebrate the Eucharist at Archbishop Odelir José Magri’s installation Mass Feb. 9.
Anglican reports that the Archbishop Magri acknowledged the Anglican Episcopal Church of Brazil’s Rev. Vivian Schwanke De Oliveira’s presence at the Mass during his homily. He stated that her participation indicated unity among Christians.
Oliveira processed into the Mass with Catholic priests, “concelebrated” the Eucharist, and received Holy Communion.
The installation Mass marked the creation of the Archdiocese of Chapeco and the installation of its first archbishop.
Brazilian Catholic news agency ACI Digital contacted the archdiocese and asked them to clarify why Oliveira had been permitted to concelebrate and receive Holy Communion.
Archbishop Magri responded to ACI Digital in a Feb. 13 statement, indicating that he had already communicated with Brazil’s Apostolic Nunciature about the “isolated incident of inadvertent violation of liturgical norms” at the installation Mass.
The Archbishop added, “We renew our commitment to doctrinal orthodoxy and liturgical orthopraxis, and will make efforts to avoid future errors.”
