CV NEWS FEED // Fr. Martin Chambers, the bishop-elect of a diocese in Scotland, unexpectedly passed away in his sleep on the evening of April 9.
Independent Catholic News (ICN) reported that Pope Francis nominated Fr. Chambers to become the next bishop of the Diocese of Dunkeld in February. His episcopal ordination was scheduled to be on April 27.
Fr. Chambers was a priest in the Diocese of Galloway under Bishop Frank Dougan, who paid tribute to him in an announcement on April 10.
“I know his family and the people of Galloway diocese who knew him and loved him will be deeply shocked and dismayed at his untimely death,” Dougan said in the statement. “Together we give thanks for the selfless service he gave to our diocese; we recognise the enormous contribution he made to support some of the poorest communities in Ecuador and we pray for the repose of his soul.”
Dougan added that “To know Martin was to know a man of love, enthusiasm, humour and a deep faith which enlivened all that he did.”
ICN reported that Chambers was born in 1964 and ordained in the Diocese of Galloway in 1989. In addition to serving as a parish priest in numerous churches around the diocese, he established the Martin Chambers Ecuador Trust in 2006 to provide aid to the poorest people of Ecuador through feeding programs, educational projects, and more.
