CV NEWS FEED // The United States Catholic Conference of Bishops Chairman for the Committee on Pro-Life Activities Bishop Michael F. Burbidge of Arlington is calling on the faithful to “thoroughly surround mothers in need with loving support.”
In a statement released by the USCCB on Wednesday, Bishop Burbidge called on Americans to provide aid to expectant mothers in need in a statement on the anniversary of Roe v. Wade.
“We recognize that often the most immediate way to protect babies and mothers from abortion is to thoroughly surround mothers in need with loving support, ‘walking with’ them in their journey of motherhood,” the bishop said.
Burbidge said that “while we as a Church have rejoiced that this scourge on our nation no longer stands as the law of the land,” loss of over 65 million children who died during Roe’s nearly 50-year reign is still cause for grief.
He continued:
Each of us is called to radical solidarity with women facing an unexpected or challenging pregnancy,” he said, and reminded all that the most immediate way to protect babies and mothers from abortion is to thoroughly surround mothers in need with loving support, ‘walking with’ them in their journey of motherhood.
The bishop implored lawmakers to “support policies that assist women and their children and help families to flourish,” praising the USCCB’s nationwide initiative, Walking With Moms in Need, abortion healing ministries such as Project Rachel. “May all people of faith and good will proclaim that human life is a precious gift from God and that each person who receives this gift has responsibilities toward God, self, and others,” he concluded:
“And may we work together towards the day when society, through its laws and institutions, protects and nurtures human life at every stage of its existence.”
