CV NEWS FEED // Comedian Bill Maher warned Democrats Sunday that they will keep losing elections if they continue pushing extreme positions on “transgender” issues.
Speaking on the “Pod Saves America” podcast, Maher debated former Obama speechwriter Jon Lovett, criticizing Democratic support for subjecting children to so-called “gender-affirming” treatments.
“The Democratic position in [California] has been that the school has the right to hide it from the parents. That is not something that’s going to go well with the average voter,” Maher said.
“You want to lose every election? Just keep coming down on the side of parents coming in second in a who-gets-to-decide-what-goes-on-with-my-kid contest,” he added.
The debate stemmed from Maher’s Feb. 14 discussion with former Democratic Ohio Rep. Tim Ryan and journalist Pamela Paul on HBO’s “Real Time,” where Maher criticized the political Left’s unwillingness to discuss concerns about “transgender” policies.
“The problem on the Left isn’t just that they’re for this,” Maher said in a video posted to X, “but that if you even talk about it, that’s really bad.”
Expanding on the issue in his debate with Lovett, Maher said: “If you even question this, you’re some sort of a bigot. And this is new science. And it has to do with children. And it’s not going to look good in the future, that position.”
Maher pointed to an unpublished 2024 study that found that puberty blockers did not improve children’s mental health.
As CatholicVote previously reported, the study was never published because its author, Dr. Johanna Olson-Kennedy, didn’t want its findings to be “weaponized” or used to “fuel the kind of political attacks that have led to bans of the youth gender treatments.”
Maher’s latest remarks add to his growing opposition to Democratic messaging. Earlier this month, he accused the party of ignoring issues “that matter most” to Americans, as Fox News reported.
Maher cited a New York Times article from Feb. 2 that found many voters believe the Democratic Party is too focused on “social issues” instead of the pressing “economic issues that matter most.”
A November poll similarly found that many voters thought former Vice President Kamala Harris was too focused on “transgender” and other controversial cultural issues during her 2024 campaign, fueling further concerns for Democrats ahead of the next election.
