CV NEWS FEED // In the wake of a successful lawsuit against the Biden-Harris administration’s attempt to force religious organizations to provide insurance coverage for “transgender” surgeries, the administration is paying $210,000 in lawyers’ fees and costs.
According to the Alliance Defending Freedom, whose lawyers defended the Christian Employers Alliance (CEA), the lawsuit succeeded in March. The federal district court ruled that religious employers do not have to cover “transgender procedures” and that federally funded religious doctors do not have to perform those procedures.
Christian Employers Alliance v. U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission asked the court “to prevent the administration from imposing two mandates against CEA,” according to ADF, and the court did so.
The lawsuit was directed against the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, arguing that the commission misinterpreted Title VII’s policies against sex discrimination by forcing religious employers to pay for transgender procedures.
ADF stated that the lawsuit also “challenged the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ reinterpretation of ‘sex’ in federal law to include gender identity,” which forced federally funded religious healthcare providers to perform “gender-affirming” surgeries and procedures.
ADF Senior Counsel and Director of Regulatory Practice Matt Bowman stated after the lawsuit concluded, “All employers and health care providers, including those in the Christian Employers Alliance, have the constitutionally protected freedom to conduct their business and render treatment in a manner consistent with their deeply held religious beliefs.”
“The employers we represent believe that God purposefully created humans as either male or female, and so it would violate their religious beliefs to pay for or perform life-altering medical procedures or surgeries that seek to change one’s sex,” he continued. “We’re pleased to favorably conclude this lawsuit on behalf of our clients and hold the administration accountable for trying to force unlawful mandates that disrespect people of faith.”
