CV NEWS FEED // At a benefit dinner on April 27, Guadalupe Radio Network honored the Little Sisters of the Poor with its “Fishers of Men Award” for their outstanding work for the prolife cause.
In a speech delivered to the some 200 gathered at the dinner, Archbishop William E. Lori of Baltimore described the sisters as “compassionate” and “utterly responsible,” in their work to “promote a family spirit,” according to a report from Catholic Review.
“They revere the sacredness of human life,” the Archbishop said, “And they affect the lives of those they serve as well as their families.”
The Little Sisters of the Poor have been to the US Supreme Court three times over the Affordable Care Act that attempted to mandate employers to offer health insurance plans covering contraception and abortion.
They also provide care for the elderly at 19 homes across the US and 30 in other countries.
The Superior of the Jeanne Jugan Residence in Washington DC, Mother Margaret Regina Halloran, accepted the award, calling it a “great accomplishment” for her religious community.
She also entreated her audience to spread the word about the Little Sisters, and to invite young women to volunteer and be open to a religious vocation among them:
I would just ask you, if some of you have daughters or granddaughters, to tell them a bit about us.
The dinner was preceded by a Mass celebrated by Archbishop Lori at the National shrine of the Immaculate Conception.
