CV NEWS FEED // The beatification process has opened for a lay woman from the Philippines whom Pope Saint John Paul II honored with the Mother Teresa of Calcutta Award.
According to an August 22 AsiaNews report, Bishop Mylo Hubert C. Vergara of the Pasig Diocese in the Metro Manilla region has opened the diocesan phase of Laureana “Ka Luring” Franco’s cause for beatification and canonization.
The report states that Msgr Vergara has confirmed the appointments of the Historical Commission that will handle the written works attributed to Ka Luring and that delegates heard testimonies and began working through administrative aspects of the beatification process during an event held at the Archdiocesan minor basilica and shrine of St Anne in Taguig City.
Ka Luring was a member of the Legion of Mary who was known for her life-long dedication to serving the poor as well as the Diocese of Pasig. She was also the first lay minister of Communion in the Archdiocese of Manilla, and one of two women in the country at the time who had been authorized to administer Communion.
As AsiaNews reports, Ka Luring had formerly worked as a switchboard operator for the Philippine Air Force before leaving in 1969 “to become a full-time, unpaid catechist for the Legion of Mary.”
“Her dedication to the sick and poor was especially noteworthy, as she often provided care and assistance to those in need without seeking recognition some for her efforts,” the report added: “Her life of service and virtue inspired many, and her cause for canonization reflects her impact on those who met her along the way.”
The Vatican recognized her as a Servant of God on July 10 this year.
