CV NEWS FEED // Catholic schools in the Diocese of Austin are preparing for a potential wave of new students following Texas’ enactment of the largest school choice program in the nation.
The law, now in effect, provides eligible families with up to $8,000 annually through Education Savings Accounts (ESAs), allowing them to cover private school tuition and related educational costs — a move Catholic leaders have championed as a win for parental rights and educational justice.
With the law now in place, Catholic schools are discerning how to embrace new growth while staying rooted in the communities and values that define their mission.
Misty Poe, superintendent of Catholic Schools for the Diocese of Austin, says schools are eager to welcome new families while also mindful of the pastoral and cultural responsibilities this growth brings.
“While expanded access offers many benefits, we have a priority to welcome new families and build community,” Poe told CatholicVote. “Our school communities make Catholic schools unique and foster a sense of belonging.”
She noted that as enrollment grows, schools will need to be intentional about maintaining their unique Catholic identity. Poe said the diocese is committed to creating supportive environments that encourage both spiritual growth and strong communal ties.
“We will continue to develop strategies to address these challenges proactively,” she added.
The school choice program is currently limited to around 90,000 students statewide, and Poe noted that it’s difficult to predict exactly how it will impact Catholic school enrollment. She emphasized, however, that the funds are meant to empower families — not institutions — to “choose the educational environment that best suits their needs.”
While the scope of the program’s impact remains uncertain, diocesan leaders are staying attentive to the possibilities it may open.
“As demand potentially increases, our schools will adapt and develop programs to best serve the growing community,” Poe said. “We are excited about welcoming new families, which may bring new opportunities and fresh energy. We remain open to how the Spirit will guide us in fostering a welcoming, vibrant, and faith-filled environment amidst these new opportunities and our expanding community.”
