CV NEWS FEED // The Archdiocese of Miami has opened a K-4 school for underprivileged children. The school is primarily serving the children of migrant families.
The diocesan website announced the opening of the Little School, a Lasallian Catholic school located in the La Salle Educational Center in the city of Homestead. On August 18, Archbishop Thomas Wenski celebrated Mass and blessed the new school building, which opened the next day.
“We also have to ask God for His blessings, so we do, in fact, give our best efforts, because God doesn’t want mediocrity, and so, by blessing the school, we ask God’s blessings upon us so that we do our best,” the Archbishop said, according to 7 News Miami.
The Little School is the first Catholic school in the area, the diocesan website reported, “and is part of a three-phase initiative by the De La Salle Brothers to bring educational excellence and serve the community, especially focusing on low-income and migrant families.” The brothers intend on expanding the school into a K-12 Lasallian education.
The president of the La Salle Educational Center, Michael Scaramuzzo, stated, “”We are thrilled to bring the Lasallian educational tradition to South Miami-Dade County and back to the Archdiocese of Miami,” adding, “The opening of The Little School is just the beginning of our vision to provide comprehensive K-12 education that supports the academic and personal growth of every student.”
The diocesan website related that the Little School is the fourth Catholic school to open in the Archdiocese within three years. The Little School will “provide an education focused on intellectual, spiritual, and human formation to develop students’ leadership skills, academic prowess, and faith, empowering them to become people of integrity, break the cycle of poverty, and shape their own prosperous futures.”
The De La Salle Brothers, or the Brothers of Christian Schools, are a religious order dedicated to teaching and catechizing, with a special dedication to their poorest students. They were founded by St. Jean-Baptiste de La Salle in 1680 in France.
