CV NEWS FEED // In an exclusive interview with The Washington Examiner, former President Donald Trump revealed that he is rewriting his speech for the Republican National Convention (RNC) to focus on calling for national unity in light of the assassination attempt against him.
“This is a chance to bring the whole country, even the whole world, together. The speech will be a lot different, a lot different than it would’ve been two days ago,” Trump said, according to the Examiner’s July 14 article written by journalist Salena Zito.
On July 13, Trump was speaking at a rally in Pennsylvania when a gunman opened fire. The former president and two other people were injured, and one person was killed.
Trump’s RNC speech, which he will give on Thursday, July 18, was initially going to focus on President Joe Biden’s policies, according to Zito.
Had the shooting not happened, Trump said, “this would’ve been one of the most incredible speeches,” which he said “was going to be a humdinger.”
“Honestly, it’s going to be a whole different speech now,” he added.
Trump shared that his initial plan was “to excite his voter base,” Zito wrote, and now it is to “[demonstrate] his belief that the attack on him at a rally in Pennsylvania had changed the election campaign entirely.”
