CV NEWS FEED // Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro this week announced that he will move Christmas to October 1, after arresting 2,000 people in the wake of his controversial win of the presidential election, according to a recent NBC News report.
Maduro announced the change during a television appearance on September 2, NBC reports. Promising a season of “peace, happiness and security,” he said, “It’s September, and it already smells like Christmas. That’s why this year, as a way of paying tribute to you all, and in gratitude to you all, I’m going to decree an early Christmas for October 1.”

Both Maduro’s party and the opposition party claimed to have won the July 28 election, and it is Maduro’s third six-year term as president, NBC states.
According to the Daily Mail, Brazil, Mexico, and Columbia, all of which support Maduro, have refused to recognize the results as official until they see “detailed vote tallies.”
The NBC article states that Maduro’s recent actions “have been less than festive, with critics accusing him of brutal repression against his political opponents,” citing the arrest of 2,000 persons including journalists and politicians.
