CV NEWS FEED // India launched airstrikes into nine sites in Pakistan and Pakistani territory May 7, resulting in 31 casualties and dozens of injuries.
The New York Post reports that India’s “Operation Sindoor,” named after the mourning color worn by Hindu widows, was a response to an April 22 terrorist attack on India’s portion of Kashmir that killed 26 Indian Hindu men. India attributed the attack to Pakistan, but Pakistan denied involvement.
In Operation Sindoor, India targeted what it called “terrorist infrastructure” sites in Pakistan, areas linked to the groups Jaish-e-Mohammed and Lashkar-e-Taiba. The country also stated that it used warheads to avoid civilian casualties and that the attack was a pre-emptive strike based on intelligence of impending attacks.
New York Post reports that the Indian military posted a war propaganda video on X minutes before the attack with the caption “Ready to Strike, Trained to Win. #IndianArmy.”
After the attack, the account posted, “Justice is Served. Jai Hind [Hail India!]”
Pakistan reports that airstrike targeted two mosques, which India disputes, and that the attack resulted in 26 casualties. As a response, the Pakistani military shot down three Indian fighter jets. Two landed in villages within the Indian region of Kashmir and one fell in Kashmir.
India reports seven casualties as a result of Pakistani artillery fire.
“Pakistan has every right to give a robust response to this act of war imposed by India, and a strong response is indeed being given,” Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said in a statement.
India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi oversaw Operation Sindoor but has not commented.
