CV NEWS FEED // A new Catholic diocese in Nigeria recently developed a pastoral plan and mission.
In 2023, Pope Francis split off part of the Diocese of Sokoto to form the 60th diocese of Nigeria, the Diocese of Katsina, according to an October 2023 article from Vatican News. He appointed then-Father Gerald Mamman Musa as its first bishop.
According to the 2023 Vatican Statistics, the Diocese of Katsina includes more than 19,000 Catholics, and the area’s total population is nearly 10 million.
The pastoral gathering was held at St. Vincent Ferrer Catholic Church in Gidan Fada, Malumfashi, last week, Vatican News reported April 28. Bishop Musa led clergy, religious women, catechists, and lay faithful from throughout the diocese in determining a pastoral vision.
During the assembly, the bishop asked the Holy Spirit to guide all delegates in determining which issues the young diocese needs to prioritize in order to strengthen and grow. According to Bishop Musa, communion, participation, and mission are crucial for the diocese’s evangelization efforts.
Vatican News reported that the gathering’s atmosphere “was filled with spiritual fervour, liturgical beauty, and strong fraternal bonds” and that the diocese believes gatherings like this will support its future.
