CV NEWS FEED // The Hungarian parliament passed a constitutional amendment April 14 that allows the government to prohibit public LGBT “pride” events. The amendment also states that there are only two sexes.
The Associated Press (AP) reports that the amendment, which passed 140-21, declares that children’s rights to moral, spiritual, and physical development supersede all other rights besides the right to life. The amendment codifies a law banning public “pride” events that Hungary passed in March.
The amendment is also based on a Hungarian law that forbids the distribution of material depicting homosexual or “transgender” content to anyone under 18 years of age.
The government is permitted to use facial recognition technology to identify those who attend public pride events in opposition to the new amendment. Participants may face fines of up to 200,000 Hungarian forints ($546 U.S. dollars).
The amendment also recognizes male and female as the only two sexes, which the AP states is an expansion of a previous constitutional amendment that states a mother is female and a father is male and bans same-sex couples from adoption.
According to the AP, before the vote, protestors attempted to block the parliament parking lot and bound themselves together with zip ties. Police removed the demonstrators.
The amendment also allows up to a 10-year suspension of dual citizenship for those who pose a threat to public order, public security or national security while holding citizenship in a non-European country.
